Read the direction before anything else. Vertical cracks in concrete usually come from shrinkage and stay calm. Horizontal cracks come from sideways pressure and are the direction to take seriously. Concrete pulls itself apart a little as it cures, and that tear runs top to bottom, which makes a thin vertical line in a stem wall or a slab edge the most ordinary crack a house can produce. Concrete does not tear sideways on its own. Something has to push a wall to break it across its face, and around here the something is soil. Our inspectors walk past most vertical hairlines with a note and a photo. A horizontal crack in a concrete wall stops the walk.
Why direction is the first read
Concrete is strong when you squeeze it and weak when you stretch it, and it always cracks across the direction of the stretch. Shrinkage and settlement stretch a wall along its length, so the tear runs vertical. Sideways pressure bends the wall instead, the stretch builds across the wall's face, and the tear runs horizontal. That is the whole trick. The crack sits perpendicular to whatever force made it, so a vertical crack points at forces a wall handles every day of its life, and a horizontal crack points at a force the wall was never sized to carry.

What a vertical crack usually means
Most vertical cracks are the concrete's own doing. A slab and its stem walls lose water for months after the pour, the material shrinks as it dries, and somewhere along a long run it tears. Shrinkage cracks are thin, roughly the same width top to bottom, and they show up early in a house's life, often inside the first couple of years. We find them near the middle of long wall runs and at the corners of openings where stress concentrates.
A vertical crack starts earning attention when it stops looking like that. Past about an eighth of an inch, the wall has genuinely stretched. One face sitting proud of the other means the two sides have moved independently. A wedge shape, wider at the top or the bottom, means one end of the wall is rotating or dropping, which is settlement talking rather than shrinkage. What a horizontal crack means in a stem wall
A horizontal crack says the wall is being bent. Expansive clay swells when it takes on water, and swelling clay does not only push up. It pushes out, sideways, against anything that holds it back. The wall bows away from the load, tension builds across its face, and the concrete tears in a long horizontal line, usually somewhere near mid-height of the exposed run.
Central Texas is a slab and crawl-space market, so the basement wall failures the northern half of the country knows are rare here. The same physics still finds targets. Stem walls under pier-and-beam homes hold back grade on sloped lots. Garage and porch stem walls do the same work. And the mortar bed where brick veneer meets the stem wall opens horizontally when saturated soil leans on the wall below it, often with a white mineral bloom tracking the line. Efflorescence is water leaving the wall, and water in the wall plus a horizontal crack is the pairing that moves an inspection up our schedule.
When a horizontal crack means call now
A hairline vertical can wait for a quarterly pencil check. A horizontal crack in concrete should not wait a season, and a few companions push the urgency higher. A wall face that bows, or sits proud above or below the crack line when you sight down it. A crack that opens measurably after wet spells. Staining or efflorescence riding the line. A long crack holding one consistent height across the run, which is the signature of bending. None of these mean the wall fails this week. They mean the load is active, and a wall under active lateral load gets measured now rather than next summer. The measuring costs nothing here.

Where the crack lives changes the read
Slab edge. The exposed concrete below your brick collects thin vertical and branching hairlines, and most are shrinkage or surface weathering in the outer inch of the beam. A horizontal line at the very top of the edge is often the mortar wash on the brick ledge rather than the slab itself. Depth and pattern decide, and that is a five-minute check during an inspection, not a guess from the driveway.
Stem wall. Poured concrete and block stem walls follow the direction rules at full strength. This is where vertical means shrinkage or settlement and horizontal means lateral pressure, with the fewest exceptions in the whole house.
Drywall. The rules do not transfer indoors. Drywall cracks follow seams and openings, so a long horizontal crack across a wall usually rides the taped joint between sheets and moves with humidity and framing rather than the foundation. The interior direction that does point at movement is the diagonal radiating off a door or window corner. Outside, in brick, that diagonal becomes the staircase through the mortar joints, and stair-step brick cracks decodes that third direction, which way the steps point and what the wedge shape means.

What the free inspection settles
Direction narrows the cause. Elevations confirm it. Our ICC-certified inspectors have read these walls for many years, and the floor elevation survey tells us whether the structure above the crack has actually moved, because the crack is a symptom and the numbers are the diagnosis. About a third of our inspections end with no repair needed, and a shrinkage vertical photographed for the file is a common way to land in that third.
When the survey confirms settlement drove the crack, we stabilize with steel and hybrid piers at $600 to $1,000 each, the piers carry a lifetime transferable warranty, and a yearly performance follow-up inspection checks the result after the work. When a horizontal crack traces to soil pushing rather than the house sinking, we say that instead, because piers address a foundation that dropped, and lateral pressure calls for drainage correction and masonry work before anyone talks structure.
