Are Wall Cracks Worse Than Ceiling Cracks
Usually, yes. A crack in a wall deserves more attention than a crack in a ceiling, because of what each surface is fastened to. Walls stand on the foundation, so when the slab tilts or settles the wall has to rack to follow it, and the drywall reports that racking as cracks. Ceilings hang from the roof framing, and roof framing moves on its own schedule, swelling and shrinking with attic heat and humidity whether the foundation moves or not. So the odds start out lopsided. A wall crack has a real chance of being the slab talking. Most ceiling cracks are the attic talking. Why wall cracks carry more weight
Follow the load path. Every wall in the house bears on the slab or the beams below it, so the wall is the first thing forced to change shape when the foundation under it moves. It cannot slide, so it racks, and drywall handles racking badly. The most common result is a diagonal crack leaving the top corner of a door or window, because openings concentrate the strain at their corners. Wall cracks also scale with the movement behind them. A hairline says the wall flexed. A crack you can slip a card into says one end of that wall now sits measurably lower than the other. And a wall crack with company, a door that rubs in the same zone, a stair-step line in the brick outside the same corner, is differential movement telling one story on three surfaces. Ceilings almost never testify like that.

What ceiling cracks usually are
A ceiling is a hung surface. Its drywall is screwed to joists or to the bottom chords of roof trusses, and that lumber lives beside the attic, the harshest room in the house. It bakes in August, takes on moisture through damp winters, and moves a little every year doing it. So most ceiling cracks are straight lines that follow a drywall seam, failed tape plus normal framing movement, and they reopen along the same line no matter how many times they get floated and painted. The same framing behavior is what backs screws out into nail pops, which is why ceilings pop first.
Truss uplift is the seasonal special. The top and bottom chords of a truss sit in different temperature and moisture zones, and in cool months the bottom chord can bow upward, lifting the middle of the ceiling and opening a gap where the ceiling meets interior walls. It closes by summer and does it again the next winter. It looks alarming, and it is framing behavior, not foundation movement.

Ceiling cracks earn urgency of their own in a few specific forms. A crack alongside a sag in the panel. Brown staining, which means water and makes it a roof or plumbing question before a structural one. A zigzag separation that widens and flakes. Those deserve eyes quickly, but the reason is the framing or the water, and only rarely the slab.
The crack pairs that matter
Location stops deciding anything the moment cracks start cooperating. The pair we take most seriously is a wall crack and a ceiling crack that meet, one line that leaves a door or window corner, climbs the wall, and keeps going onto the ceiling. Drywall does not coordinate like that by coincidence. One movement made both marks, and a movement big enough to write on two surfaces is worth measuring.

The joint where the wall meets the ceiling is its own case, because it is the literal seam between the two structures. Truss uplift opens it from above on a winter schedule and gives it back by summer. A settling foundation drags it open from below and does not give it back. Same gap, opposite causes, and the calendar plus a floor elevation survey separates them.

And the cluster rule outranks everything. Wall cracks, a ceiling gap, doors that stick, and a floor that slopes, all gathered near one corner of the house, is one story told four ways, whatever any single crack looks like on its own.
When each one is cosmetic
Most of the time, both are. On walls, vertical hairlines that follow a seam, uniform hairlines over many doorways that never grow, and old painted-over lines that barely breathe with the seasons are texture, not testimony. How the question gets settled
Not by staring at the drywall. A floor elevation survey maps where the slab actually sits, to the tenth of an inch, and that map either explains the wall cracks or clears the foundation. When the survey does show the foundation driving the cracks, the fix runs stabilization first and cosmetics once.
