Common questions about these rules

Yes. Alaska requires a General Contractor registration from the Alaska Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing for foundation repair. AS 08.18.025 requires the residential endorsement to construct or alter a privately owned 1 to 4 unit home, and defines alteration as changes worth more than 25 percent of the structure value. Foundation repair below that is general contractor work. No separate foundation category exists. Engineer letters are set by the local building department (Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau and others run their own).
The Construction Contractor Registration, General Contractor costs $700 (general contractor with residential endorsement, $100 application + $250 registration + $100 endorsement application + $250 endorsement (biennial)), as checked on October 18, 2026. Exam fees, insurance and any bond are extra, and the board's own fee page is the one to trust because fees change.
Alaska licenses foundation repair, general contracting, roofing, plumbing, electrical work, HVAC work, landscape irrigation, concrete flatwork, drainage and detention work, and demolition at the state level. Cities and counties can add their own registration and permits on top.
