What a roofing job needs in each city

Licensing is half of it. This is how each city handles the permit for roofing, from its own pages.

  • Abilene. Roofing contractors register with the same $75,000 bond; we did not confirm the reroof permit fee.
  • Amarillo. A reroof needs a roofing permit ($135 minimum, or cost times 0.0051; $173 for commercial), valid 180 days.
  • Austin. Like-for-like re-roofs are usually exempt; decking over 128 square feet or 50 percent or more replacement in the WUI area needs an Express permit with a registered general contractor.
  • Cedar Park. A non-structural roof covering replacement does not need a permit; structural roof work does.
  • College Station. A residential reroof permit is $190 on the FY2026 schedule.
  • Converse. Roofing needs a permit in Converse, pulled by a registered contractor.
  • Corpus Christi. A reroof needs a roofing and siding permit with a TDI windstorm WPI-1 form from the windstorm engineer or inspector.
  • Dallas. A reroof needs a Residential Roofing Permit pulled by a registered contractor.
  • Denton. Every residential roof or re-roof job needs a roof permit before tear-off; replacing decking needs a residential alteration permit.
  • El Paso. Roofing work needs a permit pulled by a registered general contractor.

  • Garland. Roof repairs or replacement worth $2,000 or more need a $150 re-roofing permit with the executed contract or the insurance adjuster's scope. A 4.5 percent technology surcharge is added to every permit.
  • Georgetown. A residential re-roof needs a $60 re-roof permit; replacing framing, slope or decking needs engineered framing plans and an energy check. Processing takes about 10 to 15 business days.
  • Grand Prairie. A residential roof repair permit is $50; commercial reroofs are 1 percent of the work with a $150 minimum.
  • Houston. A reroof or overlay on a house needs a residential roofing permit and inspection.
  • Killeen. A reroof needs a permit at $0.03 per application unit with a $50 minimum.

How to get licensed for roofing in Texas

There is no state license to apply for, so you register with each city where you take roofing jobs, as the table above shows, and pull that city's permit.

Rules and fees change, and this is not legal advice. Confirm with the city where the work is before you apply or bid.
